June 14, 2002, Newsletter Issue #52: A Tisket, A Tasket, Crochet Yourself A Basket!

Tip of the Week

C-2002 Cro-Shae

If you decide to use twine (for a larger basket), be sure to crochet loosely. When you use these baskets for real flowers, line them with plastic containers, such as cut off bleach bottles, or margarine tubs. Yarn is much easier to work with and makes cute little baskets that can be used for small dried floral arrangements or to hold little treats.

Material: Yarn, Twine, String or Thread; suitable sized crochet hook.

Start with ch 5, join, ch2, 11 hdc in ring. Join in top of ch2.

2nd Round: ch2, 2 hdc in each hdc around. join in top of ch2.

3rd Round: ch2, (2 hdc in first hdc, 1 hdc in next), repeat around and join. This is the bottom. You can stop at any round, depending on how large you want the basket. If you want it larger, add more rows continuing to increase stitches so it remains flat.

Next Round (Side starting): (Crochet in back loop of hdc this row only, this will form a ridge that resembles chain stitch). Ch2, hdc in each hdc around.

Next Round: Ch2, hdc in each hdc around.

Repeat last row until you have reached about the desired height of the basket.

Last Row of Side: ch 1 single crochet in each hdc around. For added thickness on top, you may want to reverse single crochet the last round.

Handles: Handles of baskets are several thicknesses of yarn or twine, braided together and tied inside.
