June 21, 2002, Newsletter Issue #53: Three Dimensional Crochet

Tip of the Week

Let`s begin by making something really simple, such as a toy block, using only squares, which can be crocheted freehand from a drawing. On a piece of paper, measure and draw a square. Using a simple sc, crochet the square to measure. Repeat for five more squares, sew together and stuff with something such as foam block, fiberfill or foam chips. Adding felt features gives it further texture.
When making a three dimensional shape, work in a single crochet or half double crochet for a firm fabric which will prevent the stuffing from showing.
Now, THINK BIG! Why not, using the same technique, crochet a footstool for your child`s bedroom, using bright primary colors! Foam blocks are readily available at most mattress stores.
With three dimensional crochet, the possibilities are endless! Tubular shapes can be turned into bedroom bolsters or draft stoppers!
